Covering selfish machines

چکیده
We consider the machine covering problem for selfish related machines. For a constant number of machines, m, we show a monotone polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) with running time that is linear in the number of jobs. It uses a new technique for reducing the number of jobs while remaining close to the optimal solution. We also present an FPTAS for the classical machine covering problem (the previous best result was a PTAS) and use this to give a monotone FPTAS. Additionally, we give a monotone approximation algorithm with approximation ratio min(m, (2 + ε)s1/sm) where ε > 0 can be chosen arbitrarily small and si is the (real) speed of machine i. Finally we give improved results for two machines. Our paper presents the first results for this problem in the context of selfish machines.

Maximizing the Minimum Load for Selfish Agents
We consider the problem of maximizing the minimum load for machines that are controlled by selfish agents, who are only interested in maximizing their own profit. Unlike the regular load balancing problem, this problem has not been considered in this context before. For a constant number of machines, m, we show a monotone polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) with running time that is lin...
متن کاملMaximizing the Minimum Load: The Cost of Selfishness
We consider a scheduling problem on m machines, where each job is controlled by a selfish agent. Each agent is only interested in minimizing its own cost, defined as the total load of the machine that its job is assigned to. We consider the objective of maximizing the minimum load (the value of the cover) over the machines. Unlike the regular makespan minimization problem, which was extensively...
متن کاملSelfish bin covering
In this paper, we address the selfish bin covering problem, which is greatly related both to the bin covering problem, and to the weighted majority game. What we are mainly concerned with is howmuch the lack of central coordination harms social welfare. Besides the standard PoA and PoS, which are based on Nash equilibrium, we also take into account the strong Nash equilibrium, and several new e...
متن کاملPreemptive Scheduling on Selfish Machines
We consider the problem of scheduling on parallel uniformly related machines, where preemptions are allowed and the machines are controlled by selfish agents. Our goal is to minimize the makespan, whereas the goal of the agents is to maximize their profit. We show that a known algorithm is monotone and can therefore be used to create a truthful mechanism for this problem which achieves the opti...
متن کاملCoordination Mechanism for Selfish Scheduling, Review from Average Perspective
In this paper, we design and analyse coordination mechanisms for different variants of selfish scheduling. We assume that jobs are selfish and decide to go to a machine to minimize their disutility. In a coordination mechanism, the disutility of each job is computed only based of the set of jobs that are scheduled on the same machine. We are interested in properties of the global solution impos...
